Ten of the Best Banks in America! Did yours make the list?

A coffee can stashed under a porch step, ceramic piggy banks, and the old standby: the mattress. These are some places where folks have chosen to keep their hard-earned money. For most of us, our local bank will do.

The first bank in America was established in 1791. As the country grew, banking did, too - and changed in pretty dramatic ways. The Civil War created a need for the government to fund the war efforts, and triggered the first mass selling of government bonds. During the Gilded Age of the late 19th century, commercial banking took off as entrepreneurs demanded the capital to run their businesses. Savings and loan groups popped up in the early 20th century, helping people own a home through mortgage lending. In response to the Great Depression, the FDIC was created to insure consumer deposits. The first ATM was installed in 1969; today we can also bank online and through our phones.

All banks offer the usual checking and savings accounts, but many can also provide financial products like credit cards, insurance, car loans, investments and more. Let's see your mattress do that.

There are about 6,800 banks in America; here are ten that regularly get "thumbs up" for their financial stability, product offering, rates and customer service.

1. ALLY BANK

Online banking has become a "thing" - and this company gets high marks. Because there are no actual branches, it can offer better rates and fees. Their savings accounts consistently offer a better interest rate than many other banks. You also won't get charged for using an out-of-network ATM (but Ally has 43,000 of them nationwide, so it shouldn't even be an issue).

2. BANK OF AMERICA

It's the second largest financial institution in America, serving 37 states. Their online banking tools are stellar, and include bill-paying, budgeting and saving tools. The "Keep the Change" program lets you grow your savings account through everyday purchases.

3. CHASE

As one of the biggest banks in the country, they have the resources to offer pretty much everything you need: checking and savings accounts, mortgages, auto loans and a huge selection of credit cards. Chase has 5,300 branches, but their mobile banking app gets great reviews, too.

4. CITIBANK

Take your pick from a huge variety of credit card options, like a "rewards" card or one for students. There are over 1,000 branches in the U.S. and about 34,000 fee-free ATMS. Their mobile banking option allows for remote check deposit, and you can access customer support via Twitter, Facebook, live chat as well as phone.

5. EVERBANK

They offer some of the highest-yield accounts of any bank in the country, with a pledge to outperform any competitor in interest rates. Everbank also offers outstanding mobile and online banking options.

6. HSBC

This bank makes the list for one simple reason: a super-cheap Basic Banking checking account. It'll only cost you $3. Of course, if you want a few more bells and whistles, they offer other checking products, which tie in with credit card and savings options. But, hey -- $3!

7. PNC BANK

There are almost 3,000 branches in 21 states. You'll find your basic banking services, along with investments, business loans and more. Customers love the Virtual Wallet service, an online banking tool that organizes your money in one place, to make for smarter transactions and budgeting.

8. TD BANK

They bill themselves as "America's most convenient bank" and prove it by being open seven days a week, and with longer hours than other banks. There are 1,330 branches up and down the East Coast, but if you can't make it to one, they also offer solid online and mobile banking options.

9. U.S. BANK

Their mobile banking app is considered one of the best. One feature, "Pay A Person," pretty much eliminates the need to write checks. As for financial products, take your pick from retirement accounts, insurance plans, six types of checking accounts and 17 Certificates of Deposit (CD). Just for starters.

10. WELLS FARGO

You'll never have trouble finding a branch, that's for sure. It has the most locations of any bank in America: 6,200. If you don't feel like dealing with a human, their mobile banking app syncs up with their website. The website also lets you manage any of their products, from checking accounts, to credit cards, car loans and investments.
